The Boston Art Song Society has announced that Mason Bynes will be its 2021-2022 Composer in Residence.

Bynes is a Boston-based composer who has been commissioned by organizations such as The Westerlies & Festival of New Trumpet Music, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Bass Players for Black Composers, and Lumedia Musicworks, among others.

Bynes’ vocal music will be featured at every concert throughout the 2021-22 season with a world premiere slated for May 2022.

“I am honored to have been selected as the Boston Art Song Society’s Composer in Residence this season. Having the opportunity to collaborate with singers on music inspired by my own experience as a skilled singer is so special. I love collaborating with singers because it is deeply rewarding and synergistic to connect with performers both on the craft of composition and on that of vocal performance and storytelling, ”Byrnes said in a release from hurry. “With this residency, I aspire to present original music that shows the different ways in which I resonate as a singer. I have sung in operas, chamber choirs, baroque ensembles, jazz choirs, folk duets and have also performed and composed as a singer-songwriter. The voice is multifaceted and constantly evolving, and by bringing genres together, I hope to bring music that frees the voice and frees the soul that feeds the singer.
