The Calgary Opera has announced that Jonathan Brandani will become the company’s new artistic director.
Brandani led the Calgary Opera’s record-breaking 2019 box office production of Puccini’s “La Bohème” and is passionate about educating young people and expanding opera’s inclusion. Brandani will work on the Calgary Opera’s work in the community, programming the next 50th anniversary season 2022-2023 and leading the company’s return to performing in 2022.
In a statement, Brandani said, “My wife and I are looking forward to moving to Calgary and enrolling our children in school here. We are also delighted to spend time in the mountains exploring the natural beauty of this part of the world. This city is very special and has a lot to offer as a family. Personally, I look forward to participating and contributing to the continued success of Calgary Opera. For the Calgary Opera’s 50th anniversary, we’ll show that opera is for everyone and do so by bringing the music to local communities, engaging in meaningful conversations, and ensuring that the stories and people on stage faithfully reflect the diverse people in our community.
Brandani has performed around the world in Ireland, Austria, United States, Spain, Germany and South Korea. He obtained an Honors Diploma in Conducting from the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna and holds a Masters in Conducting from Yale University. He is also a laureate of the Merola Opera Program at the San Francisco Opera.
