RIYADH: Moderate winds and heavy rain in Riyadh on Friday caused the closure of many outdoor events for public safety as part of Riyadh’s season.

As the sun set, rain began to fall on the city, with winds of 31 km/h kicking up sand.

Turki Al-Sheikh, CEO of the General Entertainment Authority and President of Riyadh Season, tweeted that due to weather conditions in Riyadh, the events had to be postponed.

One of the quickly canceled celebrations was the K-pop Stray Kids and Chungha sold-out concert that was scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.

Event organizers asked fans to evacuate the outdoor arena as “quickly and quietly as possible”, citing circumstances beyond their control as high winds made it impossible for the concert to go ahead.

Riyadh Season tweeted shortly afterwards, “For everyone’s safety, Stray Kids & Chungha concert has been postponed until further notice due to weather conditions.”

Organizers were unable to say whether the K-pop concert would be postponed or canceled altogether.

At 1 p.m., the National Meteorological Center reported that there would be medium to heavy rain and sandstorms expected in the area. Many of Riyadh’s season visitors were prepared and equipped with umbrellas and raincoats for the festivities.

During the day, Riyadh Season sent out a thread of tweets announcing the closure of all outdoor events and areas for public safety.

Winter Wonderland also closed due to heavy rain in the northern region, with many of its rides unable to operate.

Among the closed outdoor events in Riyadh were Combat Field, Riyadh Safari and Nabd Al-Riyadh.

According to Riyadh’s official season Twitter page, many events will return to normal on Saturday after the rain has passed.

Saudi Press Agency reported earlier that with Riyadh it will rain in Makkah, Madinah, Hail, Qassim and Alkhobar region.
