The cast and creative team celebrated the opening of the Off-Broadway opera on January 31.

The new lyrical adaptation of Respondent Clothes officially opened Off-Broadway at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at the Lincoln Center Theater on January 31, after performances began on January 13. Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage wrote the libretto, based on her play of the same name, with music by Ricky Ian Gordon and direction by Bartlett Sher.

The story centers on Esther, a seamstress in New York at the turn of the century, who sews corsets and women’s underwear. His own search for love leads to an epistolary relationship, an unhappy marriage, and ultimately a recognition of his own worth.
