At the age of five, after seeing the production of his local town hall of Olivier !, Jonathan Bailey knew, quite passionately apparently, that he wanted to become an actor. Many years later and after a wealth of theatrical experience, Bailey is set to become the main man in the second installment of one of Netflix’s most successful shows, Bridgerton, having played a more minor role in the first season, which belonged to his sister, Daphne.
It was on his 31st birthday that the producers offered Bailey the role of Anthony Bridgerton, for what can only be considered a life-changing phone call. The first series focused primarily on the exploits of her sister Daphne (played by Phoebe Dynevor) and her romantic escapades with the Duke of Hastings, played by Regé-Jean Page. Now, in a season that will focus on Anthony’s romantic endeavors with Kate Sharma, played by rising star Simone Ashley, Bailey is set to take center stage (or screen) throughout future episodes. The highly anticipated second season follows the turbulent love trial of Anthony, Kate and Kate’s sister, Edwina Sharma (played by Charithra Chandran). Believing he has found his soul mate in Edwina, Anthony is suddenly captivated by his bubbly and intelligent sister, Kate. Talk to Weekly Entertainment, Anthony described the dynamic as both interesting and “bestial”, describing the characters as being “animals with each other”.
