On Wednesday evening, soprano Marlis Petersen, with pianist Stephan Matthias Lademann, gives a magnificent program of songs which she calls Inner world. A quick glance at the program, provided by Wigmore Hall online and very informative, sets the theme for the evening. Program notes also usefully include the lyrics of the song, in the original and in the translation. It includes Seele Nacht und Träume, Richard Strauss Die nacht, Johannes Brahms Nachtwandler, Hugo Loup Die Nacht, Mahler, Liszt, Brahms, Faure and many others.
Well you get the idea.
This is part of a series of four recitals, this one examining our inner world of dreams and visions. She has grouped the songs under headings – In English the groups are: Night and dreams (German), Interior movement (German), Interior movement (French), Redemption and return to the sources (German). It’s a demanding program, not for the newcomer, but full of wonderful vocal lollipops that Marlis Petersen is more than capable of delivering.
